Why Volunteer?

You can be part of a dedicated team helping homeless, abandoned and abused animals in our community. You will meet new people with similar interests and hobbies. You will be able to share special skills and develop new ones to benefit yourself and the organization. You can enhance your resume with valuable experience and acquire references. You also get an overload of wet kisses, soft purrs, paw prints, and tail wags.

paw  Transportation of Animals - Transport our animals to and from vet appointments and to and from off-site adoption locations.

paw  Administrative Support - Clerical assistant, mailings, filing, data entry are many of the tasks with which we need your help.
paw  Artwork and Graphics
paw  Collection Jar Program - Place donation jars at business locations; collect funds monthly; report activities.
paw  Fund Raising/Special Events - Serve on a committee for one of our many special fundraising events.
paw  Grooming - Assisting the staff to uncover the beauty of our animals and help the animal feel better.
paw  TLC (Tender Loving Care) - Socializing, walking, and caring for the Humane Society animals.
paw  Maintenance of Facilities - General maintenance, painting, and other facility improvement projects.

 


How To Become A Volunteer

All volunteers must be at least 13 years old.  Volunteers between 13 and 15 years of age must be supervised by an adult at all times.  The frequency of volunteering depends on your schedule and your job placement. Your skills and interest will be carefully matched to a job you'll enjoy!

If you are interested in volunteering, e-mail us at hsecvolunteer@gmail.com. All volunteers must first attend orientation.  Volunteer orientation is held the second Saturday of each month at 1pm and the third Wednesday at 3:30pm.  A schedule of upcoming orientations is listed below.  Volunteers younger than 18 must be accompanied by their parent or guardian.  To sign up for orientation, please contact the facility at 413-7247 or email hsecvolunteer@gmail.com

All volunteers are required to attend an orientation session prior to donating time to the Humane Society.

Schedule of Community Service Volunteer Orientations

The Humane Society of Eastern Carolina does welcome community service volunteers, as long as they adhere to our guidlines.  Volunteers needing to complete hours whether it is court-ordered or lawyer-recommended are considered community service volunteers.

  1. All community service volunteers must be 18 years or older.

  2. The Humane Society of Eastern Carolina will only accept community service volunteers if their charge falls within the following guidelines:

    • The charge is a nonviolent misdemeanor.  Ex, underage alcohol possession, traffic violations, larceny

    • The charge is not associated with drugs. We will not accept paraphernalia nor possession charges whether it is an illegal substance or a prescription drug.

  3. Community service volunteers must show proof that their charge falls within our guidelines and attend community service orientation before any hours can be acquired.

Community service orientation is scheduled for the second Saturday of each month at noon and the third Wednesday of each month at 2:30 pm. To register for community service orientation, please call (252) 413-7247 or email hsecvolunteer@gmail.com.  Community service volunteers must wear closed toed shoes and arrive to orientation on time.  Community service volunteers arriving late will be asked to attend orientation at a later date.

paw  Foster Home - Provide temporary homes for sick, injured, old and young animals or nursing mothers until they are ready to be placed for adoption.

paw  Adoption Counseling - Educating the public and helping potential pet owners with the selection and adoption of homeless animals.
paw  Off-Site Adoptions - Take the Humane Society animals to off-site adoption programs or participate in various community events to spread our message.
paw  Humane Education - Teach K-6 children about humane animal treatment by making a presentation in the classroom or at the facility where you can provide a tour of the facility
paw  Publicity - Television and radio appearances to promote the facility and its activities.
