Jazz

A Happy Ending

What a handsome boy!

I wanted to take the time to thank you all for allowing me to take home a wonderful Australian Shepherd you guys had dubbed “Danny” way back in February 2006. I don’t know if anybody will remember him because I don’t believe he was with you long, but he has been an excellent friend since the day I brought him home. Since then, I have renamed him “Jazz,” because I felt it better suited his personality. He’s also gained a couple of pounds to round out his skinny, adolescent body to make him quite the handsome 2 ½-year-old boy.

I had lost a dog a couple of months before I had adopted him due to extreme aggression and had initially been looking for a German shepherd. However, no place would allow me to adopt one simply because of my age (I was 19 at the time). They judged me early and jumped to the conclusion that I was an irresponsible owner. You guys overlooked that and took the time to listen to my experience with dogs. Jazz was one of two possible dogs to adopt and I drove 3 hours to visit him. I fell in love immediately with his bouncy, wiggly, happy self.

The minute I put him in my car, I knew I made the right choice. He lay down and calmly slept the entire drive back to Durham, NC. He quickly got to know the cats and learned they were not play toys (of course he could never resist picking on my blind cat, who consistently wins the battles). I also found him to be incredibly smart, picking up on his training instantly and he’s become a very well mannered dog both in public and at home. The only problems I’ve had with him throughout the time we’ve shared are his urinating in the house and his hatred for nail-trims (I don’t know how you guys did it!). For a while, I thought I’d have to take him back, but I found that I just needed to restrict the amount of water he drank. If given the chance, he will guzzle gallons down at a time. His nail-trims are never easy and soon he will be going to a class to learn to be calm when nail clippers are revealed.

Things have really changed for me over the past year or so and Jazz has been by my side the entire way. He moved with me to Georgia, where we lived in a one-bedroom apartment for six months with my military boyfriend. My boyfriend and all his Army buddies fell in love with him and he likes to believe that Jazz loves him more than me. He was there at night when my boyfriend was away at training to keep me feeling safe. Jazz then came back to Durham when my boyfriend deployed to Iraq and he’s been a good distraction for me since then. Just last month, I rescued a Siberian husky who came from an unfortunate situation and the two have been best buddies ever since. Their energy levels match perfectly and they wear each other out every day.

This Aussie has really matured into an excellent dog. He’s exactly what I wanted. He’s the perfect, balanced dog to take to the dog park. He’s the calm, well-mannered dog I love to take into public. He adores people of all kinds and in return, people adore him. I get so many compliments on how well behaved he is or the unique striping he’s got down the middle of his face. He knows who’s boss and doesn’t challenge me, which makes him the best cuddle buddy.

I’m so glad you guys rescued him and gave him a chance, allowing me the opportunity to stumble upon the perfect addition to my family.
