PersephoneA Black Cat Success Story
As a graduate student at ECU, I had taken in a stray black cat back in 1996 that I named Athena. I went to PCHS to adopt a second cat. I didn't go there with the intention of getting another black cat. In fact, I was looking at a beautiful Russian Blue at the shelter. It was a busy Saturday afternoon and I was waiting my turn to talk to a shelter worker. It was spring and there were two cages full of black kittens. While waiting I jokingly said to my friend, "I should just get another black cat so all the hair on my clothes will be the same color". Well one of the shelter workers over heard me and immediately came over. She explained how black cats were hard to adopt out and if I already had one and was at all willing to adopt a another that they had a lot of black kittens just then that really needed homes. That was that, I picked out a cute little black girl and named her Persephone. Persephone is now seven years old . She is a sweet and sassy cat. Although Athena passed on, Persephone now lives with a black dog adopted from the Orange County Animal Protection Society. I would like to commend PCHS on your efforts to find home for black cats and dogs since they are so often passed by. Since moving away I have seen the annual Black Dog Day event on your website and I think it is great. Keep up the good work. Martha Wilaby
