Pete's Story

Pete, underweight and in sad shape, the day he arrived at HSEC.

Recently, someone came to us with his dog in desperate need of medical attention. He said he had been away for the last seven months and thought his family was taking care of his dog. When he came home, he found his dog alarmingly skinny and in need of medical attention. He came to us because he “heard the Humane Society helps animals.”

It is very rare that we have space open, but luckily we had room to take in this dog, renamed Pete. Pete is a four year old APBT mix. Besides being severely underweight, Pete also had a skin rash, two abscessed molars which had to be pulled and he is heartworm positive.

In spite of the neglect he suffered from, Pete is one of the friendliest dogs we have. He fell asleep in one of the staff member's laps and even started snoring as he was being vaccinated and tested for heartworms.

Treating Pete and the countless animals like him can be very expensive. Our adoption fees only pay us back for the cost of the spay/neuter surgery and their vaccines. Pete’s vet bill will far exceed the $95 adoption fee we’ll receive WHEN he finds his forever home.

Pete, one week after he arrived at HSEC - looking a little better.

Pete looking much healthier and happier after three weeks at HSEC.
