HSEC and New Leash on Life (NLOL)

Meet Drake, one of the latest lucky dogs to be
chosen for the New Leash on Life program.
In the NLOL program, dogs selected from local agencies are
placed with inmate trainers in a prison setting for eight to twelve weeks.
The inmates teach basic obedience, house training, and socialization
through positive reinforcement and repetition. Dogs are taught to walk on
and off the leash and to respond to basic commands.
This is a positive experience for both the inmate and the
dog. Upon graduating from NLOL, the dog is a good bit ahead of most
shelter and humane society pets in the way of adoptability. They are
well socialized with people and dogs, housebroken, crate trained and know
basic obedience commands such as sit, down, stay, and leave it. The
new owners simply need to follow through on reinforcing what the dog has
learned during their time in NLOL. While this does require work on
the owner's part, it is a far cry from starting from scratch.
